We are honored to have Dr. Charles Nies (PhD), the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at UC Merced, on the show. He served in various roles in higher ed such as the Vice Chair of the California Student Aid Commission, appointed by CA Gov. Gavin Newsom. He looks back at his role in shaping the youngest UC campus in California in its early days, his approach towards bridging campus growth and student leadership for the student body to thrive academically and socially. As a first generation undergrad himself, he shares what drove his passion towards his research in student development and leadership theory throughout his career as a double major in Psychology and Theology. Word got around that Charles Nies, the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, is leaving UC Merced to become the 10th Chancellor of the University of Minnesota Duluth. After almost 20 years of service in and out of his office, he managed to translate everything the campus administration says to us without any bloopers. He served as an important piece of the 2020 Campus Expansion and led the way for both the state and federal government to invest more in higher education.
