If you snitched or grassed on someone at school, no one would hang out with you because no one could trust you. It was seen as kiss ass, suck up behavior and was unattractive. The internet has made it easier to escape the social consequences of this behavior and so it has taken on a life of its own as the snitches no longer get snitches or face the consequences of their behavior.
