She offers four practical strategies: carefully examine the competing project to assess how it truly differs from yours; consider whether the overlap signals a hot topic with room for multiple voices; identify different venues or presses to find your own lane; and, most counterintuitively, reach out to the potential scooper as a possible collaborator.
