In the early 1900s, there was a rash of axe murders targeting African-American families in Louisiana and Texas. When word began to spread that a "Voodoo priestess" was responsible for the murders, the media ran wild with the mostly unfounded story, spreading fear and misinformation about the motivations for the crimes.
