The myths of the Maori people of New Zealand are fascinating and imbued with humour as well as lyricism. Those myths form part of the backdrop to the 1986 novel, "The Matriarch", by the Maori writer Witi Ihimaera. Another key text from 20C NZ literature is the novel "Man Alone" by the pakeha writer John Mulgan.
