Anton Howes is historian-in-residence at the Royal Society of Arts, and head of innovation research at the Entrepreneurs Network. We discuss how an 'improving mentality' explains 15th-19th Century innovations (the steam engine, navigation, etc.), whether the occult influenced this mindset, and the effect of institutions in spreading this compulsion to innovate.
