Classnotes Podcast (March 7, 2013) The decision to change careers is a big one. Hundreds of Texans have done just that to become teachers in high-need school districts. IDRA has helped them through accelerated teacher certification projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Now in their third year of teaching, Martha Alonso, MBA, and her sister Marlene Alonso, MBA, energetically share their experiences in the classroom and how they are constantly learning in order to provide high-quality instruction to their students.A fourth grade bilingual teacher, Marlene talks about the bilingual strategies she’s learned to use her students. Martha teaches middle school ESL and talks about the importance of building relationships with students. Martha and Marlene are interviewed by Linda Cantú, Ph.D., an IDRA senior education associate anddirector of IDRA’s federally-funded Transitions to Teaching projects.Show length: Send comments to [email protected]Sign up for Classnotes e-mail alerts.ResourcesIDRA Transitions to Teaching websiteEarn a teaching certificate in 12 to 15 months while you are teaching and learning teaching skills.http://www.idra.org/Accelerated_Teacher_Certification/Transitions_to_Teaching/Coaching and Mentoring for Novice TeachersDynamic induction training for mentors and new teachers.http://www.idra.org/resource-center/coaching-and-mentoring-new-teachers/Building Teaching Quality from the Start – New Skills for New TeachersLinda Cantu, Ph.D., and Rosana G.
