Though the Church is meant to embody unity in Christ, it has housed racial division for much of its history. Conversations about race are quickly shut down in the name of preserving comfort or a superficial sense of unity. It seems Black Christians, in particular, are frequently accused of “idolizing their race” whenever they speak about their racialized experiences. But does this kind of avoidance truly promote unity—or does it cause deeper harm? What place does race, ethnicity and culture have in the Kingdom of God? Should we ever mention them?
