Can we solve a problem with the same energy that created it?I don't think we end hate by meeting it with hate.I think love is required. We must love ourselves and one another.Self-love because we white people are not used to seeing ourselves in a negative light around issues of race and equity. If we say things and get it wrong or are afraid to say things and get it wrong - we need self-love to cope with the difficult emotions that are going to arise.Standing up for the right is a thankless job fraught with opportunities for hard learning. In order to keep moving forward, I have to have enough love to take responsibility, to repair (internally or externally), to have compassion (for myself or others) that I will not proceed. To heal, we need love.Reading ResourcesTa-Nehisi Coates’ article, The Case for ReparationsVan Jones’ article, “Black People ‘Loot’ Food..White People ‘Find’ Food”BooksThe New Jim Crow, Michelle AlexanderCaught, Marie GottschalkBetween the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi CoatesWhite Fragility, Robin DiAngeloMe and White Supremacy, by Layla F.
