In this episode of Living in Step with the Holy Spirit, Bruce Downes reflects on 1 Thessalonians 5:16–22 and St Paul’s instruction: “Do not quench the Spirit.”This is a sobering reminder that while the Holy Spirit cannot be destroyed, His work within us can be resisted. His promptings can be ignored. His invitations can be delayed. His voice can become harder to hear, not because He has stopped speaking, but because we have stopped responding.Bruce reminds us that this usually happens subtly. We ignore a prompting to pray. We postpone forgiveness. We rationalise away generosity. We avoid a conviction about something that needs to change. Over time, the heart becomes less responsive.Paul also tells us to “test everything” and “hold fast to what is good.” Living in step with the Holy Spirit is not about chasing every feeling or impression. It is about becoming open and discerning, willing to listen, wise enough to test, and humble enough to obey.Today’s invitation is to pay attention to the small promptings of the Holy Spirit and respond before they are pushed aside.
