The Delaware River was named, "2020 River of the Year," by <a href="https://www.americanrivers.org/2020/04/river-of-the-year-for-2020-the-delaware-river/">American Rivers</a>, a national river conservation organization. According <a href="https://www.americanrivers.org/2020/04/river-of-the-year-for-2020-the-delaware-river/">to their website</a>, the reasons cited include:
<ul>
 <li>Federal, regional and state enforcement of clean water safeguards 
</li>
 <li>Innovative local water management, prioritizing natural infrastructure and equity 
</li>
 <li>State collaboration to ensure adequate water supplies 
</li>
 <li>Federal protections for the free-flowing river 
</li>
</ul>
However, one unheralded champion is trying to make a comeback: the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freshwater_bivalve">freshwater bivalves</a> that include mussels. Dr. Danielle Kreeger explains her work at the <a href="http://www.delawareestuary.org/about-the-estuary/">Partnership for the Delaware Estuary</a> and is trying to literally grow the population of the mussels throughout the <a href="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4f/Delaware_river_basin_map.png">Delaware River Watershed</a>.
