Proverbs In 365 DevotionsFor more go to braggingonjesus.comProverbs People bear some kind of witness with their life. They proclaim something about who they are to others. We could even think about satan himself. He proclaims his own glory… He says his way is best for us. He says sin satisfies. In the Garden of Eden he told Eve God was a liar… and that the fruit of the tree God said would bring death would actually make her like God. But satan is a false witness. Solomon says that a false witness breathes out lies. In John …When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. That’s who satan is… even when he tried his hand at quoting scripture when he tempted Jesus in the wilderness his intent was deceit and he came to Jesus as a liar. What about us? Are we a faithful witness or a false witness? Of course a witness is someone who has actually saw something. They were there and can testify because they experienced something. But as broken people in a broken world… and speaking practically that includes Christians because although we are 100% righteous positionally… practically we are still a work in progress as the Lord is conforming us to his image… As broken people then… we have to fight against the temptation to say we are more than we are. I mean, no one wants to be thought of as less than others… not smart, not clever… We rather want to be looked up to and sought out for council… We even want to look good while we stand in the spotlight. But we have to fight against that because it is a false witness of who we really are. Even in the church there are so many I fear that claim to walk close to the Lord and want to be seen as leaders or role models… The Apostle John talks about this very thing:1st John So if we stray from walking close to the Lord, (which we all do in some fashion from time to time) we are tempted to put on a self righteous front instead of humbling ourselves to the Lord in repentance. Not only are we tempted to bear a false witness to others but we can lie to ourselves also. 1st John All this lying is something we should flee from… If we truly know the Lord… and we do not call our sin what it is… rebellion against our Creator and Lord… our hearts can be seared hard like a stone so that our sweet fellowship with the Lord disappears… And that is a scary place to be… It is a red flag as to whether we have ever turned away from sin towards Jesus in the first place. But for those who will turn… there is some amazing good news. John continues: 1st John So in closing… #1; don’t trust the lies of satan. Dont believe the promises for satisfaction and life he spurts out of his mouth. And #2; don’t live your life bearing a false witness of who your are. Even as believers we must humble ourselves instead of seeking our own false exaltation. James
