Seek out the original 1999 paper by David Dunning and Justin Kruger titled Unskilled and Unaware of It, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. It is more nuanced and more interesting than most popular summaries suggest. David Dunning's subsequent writing on self-insight is also deeply worth your time.
