Sean and Kenny go to Walt Disney World and stay at The Campsites at Fort Wilderness Lodge. The campsites at Fort Wilderness are a great way to stay in the magic while visiting Disney World. There are over 700 campsites and 400 cabins, so no RV is actually needed to stay on the property. Kenny and Sean talk about how Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival, restaurants they enjoyed, the highlights of the campground and how much fun they had on a tour called the Wild African Trek at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park. The Trek is a three hour tour that included some hiking, rope bridge crossing over alligators and an open air jungle truck ride through the savanna. They had two tour guides that answered all of their questions and explained how the animals are cared for on the property.
A description and some tips for staying at the campground
When you enter the campground, on the far right there is an area for overflow parking, you can park your RV here if you arrive early the day of check-in and utilize the campground amenities and Disney’s theme parks. You can also do this the day of check-out up until midnight. It is a nice way to get the most out your stay.
Our Campsites have a large concrete pad, with room to park our RV, car and E-bikes or a golf cart even. There is a picnic table and a grill. One thing to mention is Disney does allow firepits at your campsite as long as they are completely contained. So, if you plan on having a campfire make sure it is approved before you lite it.
The sites offer full hook ups and both of our sites had wifi access, which was good enough for basic internet use. The campsites are staggered and have natural barriers using bush and trees to allow for privacy. Trash and recycling is conveniently available throughout the campground. Each camping loop has a comfort station, with pristine bathrooms and showers. Each shower has a small private changing area and the showers have really hot water. In the comfort stations there is also laundry with vending machines for laundry products. There is an app you can use that will tell you how much time is remaining on your washer/dryer and leave your change in your RV! You can only pay with a debit or credit card.
There are two dog parks one for small dogs under 30lbs and one for larger dogs over 30lbs. There is golf cart parking and a couple car parking spots there. The park is a fenced area with a few obstacles for the dogs. Bring the kids too because there is an adjacent playground and volleyball court. If you are looking for loops that are within close walking distance, consider Cypress Knee Circle or Buffalo Bend. We were told when we were there that the entire campground is now pet friendly rather than just certain loops as it was previously.
There is a Marina locate in the rear of the campground with plenty of bike and golf cart parking. There is also a sandy beach and boat rentals, as well as a stand for refreshments. This is also where you can take a boat ride to Fort Wilderness Lodge, The Contemporary or the Magic Kingdom. There are several places to enjoy food and refreshments on property such as P&Js Southern Takeout which is a Quick Service takeout and Trails End is in the same building which has a breakfast and dinner buffet. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies the chefs at these restaurants and all Disney restaurants are quite accommodating. The Hoop de doo review dinner show is also in this area at Pioneer hall. There are two camp stores located on property, one of them is the Meadow Trading post and it has RV specific items such as tank pods, toilet paper, sewer hoses in case you may need them. Near the meadow trading post there were recreational activities available such as shuffleboard, archery, and an area for scheduled movie nights and canoeing. At the meadow was the main pool and snack bar. This is one of the busier pools most of the time as it has a waterslide and a DJ there playing music and games with the children. There is also a Kiddie water play area.
Up front near where you check-in is the main bus transportation. There you can take a bus to all of the parks except for the Magic Kingdom (that is by boat only back in the marina port). You can also take a bus to Disney Springs where you will find all kinds of shopping and fantastic restaurants. The bus station has a digital display showing when the next bus will arrive and where it going, so no more guessing if you just missed the bus or not. Also located up front near the bus transportation center is the Tri-Circle D-Ranch, there you can go horseback riding.
Our last tip is if you are trying to book a stay at the campsites and the dates are not available, do not give up. Reservations at the campsites change often and people are constantly changing their vacation plans, so keep checking their website for availability.
