KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • My background is computer programming, but I’m a stay at home mum, also I’m a part time coach, mentor, author and publisher. Young people are my heart, I love activating young people. The trouble is, there’s a lot of misunderstanding and misconception around how young people are and what they need. They’re often told who they are and what they need, but how often do we ask them? Young people carry a lot, but they’re the most resilient people I’ve ever come across. The awesome thing is that all these young people are at a place where they’re refusing to stay silent, they’re uniting around the world and massive change is coming.
  • It makes me wonder, every time I hear a teenager has ‘crossed over’, what did they need? You can have friends and still feel lonely, you can have the biggest family in the world but still feel trapped. It’s a wakeup call for all of us that our young people are dying, what is it that we’re not asking or making obvious – this isn’t blaming one person, this is about collectively. One thing I did as a parent was release my five children from the need to please or make me proud. I said to them: “You don’t need to be, do or have anything in order for me to love you, there’s nothing you can do to stop me from loving you.”
  • We’re raising kids in a completely different time. Problems at school when we were kids went away when you got home and closed the door… at least until tomorrow. Today they have tablets and mobile phones, it doesn’t stop, and often the negative self-chat doesn’t come from home, they feel like they’re being bullied or aren’t pretty enough. But when you know who you are, you know who you’re not and that goes for you as the person being bullied but also for the bully as well. So, if I know who I am, I can stand in my corner and I’m not threatened by the bully, I can celebrate with you. We as adults have forgotten that it does matter what other people think of you, so it’s really important to assist in the best way that you can to create social networks of like-minded young people for your children.
  • Mindset is everything. It’s what connects and disconnects us. It’s the difference that opens doors where there once were walls, or go over, under or beside, it’s the one thing that will get you from where you are to where you want to be. Most people don’t give it enough focus or realise that it’s a foundation it helps us get out of bed in the morning when we don’t want to, it helps us navigate the space of building relationships helping us to interact with people from a place of respect rather than how can I use you and what can you do for me. Mindset is the one thing that determines our altitude in terms of success.

BEST MOMENTS

‘One thing I love doing more than anything is connecting families from where they are to where they desire to be.’

‘Be kind to your friends because you never know what they’re carrying around.’

‘Life without purpose is aimless – you don’t need to know your life purpose, you just need to have a purpose for today.’

‘I say to my kids: “You’re not your results” we have to separate it instead of putting an emphasis on competition.’
