The opening poem of the Comedy is in some ways a metaphor for the whole work of three Volumes, with the journey through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise.

These lines describes the concept of the hill (mount purgatory) and the rays of light, from Paradise:

I raised my head and saw the hilltop shawled
in morning rays of light sent from the planet
that leads men straight ahead on every road.

Canto I, verse 16-18
