Athaliah usurps power (lack of proper introduction in Chron. is proof that this is not an approved reign) and goes to any means to maintain it. Once her son whom she could control was gone, she killed any of her own family who might stand in her way to authority. There seems to be no hope for the fulfillment of God’s promises (22:9), but God reminds the people that He is sovereign and works all for His plan (22:7).
