In this episode, I'm talking to Isabell Rodríguez about her past traumas and how it's brought her to where she is today.

What we discuss:
Isabell's experience of running from herself and her past
Being sexually abused as children and how many of us don't talk or open up about it
Sometimes trauma is hard to speak about because we feel it's attached to shame, but it's more common than you think
Her experience with not having a true male figure in her life growing up
Being sexually abused by her stepbrother
Feeling like an outcast and dealing with anxiety because there was no one around that could help her
Lacking understanding of her feelings and how to deal with her emotions
Her mother's relationship with an abusive and controlling man and feeling scared for her mother and how they finally got away by fleeting to a woman's shelter
The horrible side of abuse, but also what happens when you finally escape it is just as bad
Having to build again and becoming a parent to her mother
Getting into her first relationship with someone who was also an abuser because it's what she's used to
Feeling terrified and triggered by the fact that her trauma was following her around and that something was wrong with her because this was the type of men she was attracting in her life
Abusing drugs and alcohol
Going to a mental hospital after trying to commit suicide and being diagnosed with bipolar disorder
Finally deciding that this isn't the life she wanted to have, changing her environment and starting a new life which included starting a journey towards understanding herself and acquiring knowledge
Traveling the world and meeting her husband; allowing herself to be vulnerable, to love and be loved

What we learned
Understanding why children act out as a cry for help
How easy it is to fall in love with someone or a version of someone that doesn't exist
Conscious changes and behaviors that we choose daily to make sure we change
Having one day a week where you check in with yourself
We all have answers we seek inside of us, we just haven't asked ourselves the right questions yet
Communicating and expressing your emotions and partner's response mechanisms is key to a healthy relationship especially when dating someone who has suffered from trauma
Understanding your trigger responses and where your emotions are coming from
The importance of investing in ourselves and really knowing and understanding ourselves
