Near と close は「近い」という同じ意味の形容詞です。距離について話す時は、この２つは同じ意味ですから、互いを入れ替えて使うことができます。ところが、副詞で使う場合、これら２つは違う意味になり、入れ替えて使うこともできません。そこに注意してnearとclose の違いを例文で確かめましょう。

形容詞として使う場合の near と close

下の例文はどちらも同じ意味です。

My house is very close. ✓ or

My house is very near. ✓

Where’s the nearest cafe? ✓ or

Where’s the closest cafe? ✓

Which station is nearer? ✓ or

Which station is closer?✓

 

Close to ポイント：

Close は 前置詞の to と一緒に使うことがよくあります。

Near は前置詞は付きません。

例文

My house is close to the station.
My house is near the station.
私の家は駅に近い。

＊Exception 例外があります＊

人と人との人間関係について話す時は、close を使います。near は使えません。

They’re a close family. They spend a lot of time together.

彼らは仲がいい家族なの。たくさんの時間を一緒に過ごすのよ。

My dad was closer to his brother than to his sister.

私のお父さんは、妹より弟とのほうが親密です。

Mark and I are very close friends.

副詞として使う場合の Closely と Nearly

副詞で使う時、これら２つは同じ意味として入れ替えて使うことはできません。

副詞の closely は「ちょっとの距離」を表し、nearly は「ほとんど／もう少し」という意味になります。

❌ We are nearly following the news.

⭕ We are closely following the news.
私たちはそのニュースをしっかりと追っている。

❌ I closely hurt myself.

⭕ I nearly hurt myself.
私はもう少しで自分を傷つけるところだった。
