Many people dream of relocating to a tropical island, but few make it happen. 2. Canadian restaurateur Neal Van Beers and his partner, Charmaine Sanchez, made their dream a reality — that is, by spending $30,000 to stay at a luxury resort in the Maldives for up to a year. 3. The couple swapped snowy British Columbia for the Maldives in December by purchasing the Anantara Veli resort's "Unlimited Stays in Paradise" package.  4. The $30,000 package allows two people to stay "as often as you please" in one of the resort's luxury overwater bungalows until December 23, 2021. It includes daily breakfast, transportation, and discounts on dining and the spa. 5. Van Beers has been able to work remotely from the Maldives, though he says the only downside is that Canada is 12 hours behind.  6. Van Beers starts his day with a coffee, then he settles into his workspace: a desk next to an ocean-view window. He then checks emails and does some admin before heading to breakfast. 7. The couple spends the rest of the day exploring the island and taking part in outdoor activities, including snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming. They also pass the time by reading and taking cooking classes. By dinner time, Canada has woken up, so Van Beers would reply to more emails or take a meeting. 8. The Maldives is among many countries that offer various remote-working schemes. Travelers can enter the country on a 30-day visa, which can be extended to 90 days, which Van Beers and his partner have done. 9. Van Beers said that although he's been having a great time, he has missed some of the comforts of working in an office. He said the resort has provided printing services and a stable WiFi connection, though.

The American space agency has released an astonishing image sent back from Mars by its Perseverance rover. 2. It shows the robot heading down to the ground on Thursday to make its landing. Perseverance has a large amount of data in its memory banks which it is gradually offloading to Earth. 3. Among other pictures is a view from a satellite that captures the rover in the parachute phase of its descent. This also represents an immense technical achievement because the satellite - the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter - was approximately 700km from Perseverance at the time and traveling at about 3km/s. 4. Nasa is promising more in the next few days. This offering will include short movies shot during the Entry, Descent and Landing (EDL) sequence - with sound. 5. Perseverance has been put in a near-equatorial Martian crater known as Jezero where it will search for signs of past microbial life. 6. Engineers report Perseverance to be in good health, as they gradually commission its systems. All the hardware needs to be assessed to be sure nothing was damaged during Thursday's plunge through the Martian atmosphere to the ground. 7. The science team was itching to start exploring the crater, said deputy project scientist Katie Stack Morgan. Even now, with just this limited first release of pictures, there were fascinating rocks to discuss, she told reporters. 8. Its initial mission will last one Martian year (roughly two Earth years), although it's hard to see the agency not extending this if all the hardware remains healthy. 9. As well as searching for signs of life, Perseverance's other key objective is to select and package rock samples that can be brought back to Earth laboratories by later missions.

The company is also introducing more flexibility for workers to choose their geographic location, letting them decide with their managers what city and country they'd like to work from, with some limitations because of time zone difficulties and regional laws.  4. Spotify will even arrange a membership to a co-working space for employees who move to a location without a Spotify office nearby, if that employee still prefers to work in an office environment, the company said in blog posts about the new program.  5.
Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates warned for years that a deadly pandemic could take place. Now, he’s calling out the threats of bioterrorism and climate change. 2. Gates appeared on Derek Muller’s YouTube channel Veritasium last week, where he was asked about what’s the next issue facing humanity. 3. “One is climate change. Every year that would be a death toll even greater than the one we would have in this pandemic,” the Microsoft co-founder said. 4. “Also, related to pandemics is something people don’t like to talk about much, which is bioterrorism, that somebody who wants to cause damage could engineer a virus. So that means the chance of running into this is more than just the naturally caused epidemics like the current one.” 5. Years before the coronavirus battered the globe, Gates warned that governments weren’t prepared for a pandemic. 6. “The world as a whole doesn’t have the preparedness for epidemics, and we’ve had a few flu scares that got us to do some minor things, but not enough,” he said in a 2014 interview. 7. “If this thing had been twice as transmissive, we’d be in a lot of trouble, and there are agents that have a real chance of coming on in the next several decades that are far more transmissive than this is. What’s to stop some form of SARS showing up?” 8. In a 2015 TED Talk titled “The next outbreak? We’re not ready,” Gates said an infectious virus was a greater risk to humanity than nuclear war. 9. In his interview with Muller, Gates said there will be more pandemics. However, going forward, governments could increase their preparedness to try to reduce the death tolls.
