Criston realizes that the bodies did not fall where they are lying, but his warning comes too late. The soldiers rise, attack, and draw Criston’s depleted force into the final stage of Oscar Tully’s trap.Criston survives the initial ambush and rallies his remaining men with the Hightower words, “We light the way.” The apparent victory disappears when Oscar Tully and Roderick Dustin reveal the much larger army surrounding them. Criston offers to surrender his banners if his men are spared and then challenges Oscar and Roderick to a final duel. Before the fight can begin, Alysanne Blackwood kills him with three arrows.In King’s Landing, Rhaenyra rejects Daemon’s plan to burn Tumbleton and sends assassins disguised as Baratheon envoys instead. Gwayne recognizes the false identity of one man and saves Ormund and Daeron from the attack.
