這首歌的作者佚名，作曲為李納斯（Haldor Lillenas），李納斯出生於挪威，童年移民到美國，從小沒有上過主日學，但父親經常以問答方式來教導他們聖經，十五歲時受堅振禮。母親去世後家中失去溫暖，從此他離家到一座農場工作，但心中的難過與空虛始終無法彌補。1906年，他在街頭聽到一名女子清唱一首母親期待量子回頭的聖歌，毅然決然地振作，後來他決志奉獻開始在街頭侍奉。

後來他遠赴洛杉磯研讀神學，後來在洛杉磯與女作曲家韋柏梅（Bertha Mae Wilson）結婚。 他們終生同心合力從事聖樂事工。1924年在印第安州成立了李氏音樂公司，六年後與拿撒勒人出版社合併，他擔任音樂主編有廿年之久。 他一共寫了四千多首聖詩，他是廿世紀重要的聖詩作家之一。
