Hi everyone! Thank you for tuning in to Time for English.
Are you familiar with the idiom "put something on ice"?
You can put the champagne on ice to keep it cold. But you can also put other things, like plans or ideas, on ice, when you mean "to delay" or "to postpone". Instead of doing something right away, you'll do it at a later time.
For example, you want to buy a new car, but you're still a student. So, you've decided to put your plans for a new car on ice until you finish college.
I've seen this phrase quite many times over the past few months in news stories. And it's no wonder as so many plans, ideas or events have been put on ice due to the COVID-19. Some companies have put hiring on ice. Even the Olympics and Paralympics had to be put on ice.
Anyhow, would you like to try a quiz? I'll give you three options, please listen carefully and choose the one that is CORRECT. Ready?
To put something on ice means:
1. to postpone
2. to plan
3. to freeze
