The Latin term for that sentiment is/
Carpe Diem.
Now who knows what that means?

Carpe Diem. That’s “seize the day.”

Why does the writer use these lines?

Because he’s in a hurry.

paragraph of the preface,
entitled “Understanding Poetry”?

To fully understand

poetry, we must ask two questions:
Question one rates the poem’s perfection,
question two rates its importance.
And once these questions have been answered,
determining a poem’s greatest becomes a relatively simple matter.

No, Now in my class/ you will learn to think/ for yourselves again.
You will learn/ to savor/ words and language. Savor=taste
No matter what anybody tells you,
words and ideas can change the world.
I see that look in Mr. Pitt’s eye, like nineteenth century literature
has nothing to do with
going to business school or medical school. Right?
I have a little secret for ya. Huddle up. Huddle up!

KEATING

We don’t read and write poetry because
it’s cute.
We read and write poetry
because we are members of the human race.
And the human race
is filled with passion.
Medicine, law, business, engineering,
these are all noble pursuits, and necessary
to sustain life.
But poetry, beauty, romance, love,
these are what we stay alive
for.

John Lambert (Ireland)

 

R: Hi John! Thank you for helping.

Im not really sure (what we would talk about).. we don’t talk so much… Suddenly I asked you to join this interview, its so nice that you could help me.
J: Of course.
R: I don’t know… You can introduce yourself?
J: My name is John Lambert. I live in Copenhagen. Im originally from Ireland, from small town called Shannon. And Ive been in Copenhagen for 15 years… and 3 days. I know because I came on my birthday. That’s how I know.
R: Okay! Happy birthday! I didn’t know that.
J: Thank you.
R: How come? You came to Denmark?
J: Yeah well, came to Copenhagen, not so much Denmark but specifically Copenhagen. I visited city a couple of times and have some friends here. And at that time I was living in England, in Cambridge and then I decided to move back to Ireland. But I was kind of relaxed about it and then it was like in May. And the job I had in Ireland didn’t start until September, so I had like 3 months and I thought it will be nice to go to Copenhagen for the summer, visit some friends and work there so I came to Copenhagen and I had like a part time job in an office, just doing some accounts.
R: And its also easy for you to do that when you are in EU right? Just to.. kind of try.
J: Yeah, no problem if you are EU citizen you can live or travel in EU country as long as you can support yourself economically. You have to be..
R: You just get your personal number as well?
J: Yeah you have to be either in employment or in full time education. One or the other then you can travel and live in EU country. If you can support yourself or educate yourself. So I came here planning for 3 months and going back to Ireland, in September, that was 2000, and then but I wasn’t in a hurry to get back to Ireland, and just left 2-3 years before, so and kind of I really fell in love with Copenhagen, and I still love Copenhagen, it’s a great city. So now I live here and now its my home.
R: After 15 years, and you are still here and you can stand our winter, of course you are from Ireland, its not that bad.
J: No its not that bad, its just dark. Its a lot darker than it is in Ireland.
R: What about wind?
J: No its ok, I come from the west coast from the atlantic sea.
R: So you are kind of get used to it.
J: Yeah, I actually think the weather here is pretty good. It rains a lot where I come from. But its mild, where I come from, in the winter, because it’s a long atlantic coast, because its the gulf stream from the mexican gulf, it brings warm air and warm rain so its really mild.
