Great companion to pop culture!

by pingje on
Rating: ★★★★★

There are many pop culture podcasts around, but this is my favorite, hands down. I started for GoT of course, but as the podcast has broadened its perspective, I've found it to be an indispensable companion. For example, it kept me from falling down in 2018. Still going strong in 2019.It's rare now that I don't listen to the "Calm" before seeing a movie or show. Especially in a time with mountains of contnt raining down at all times, this show helps me decide what to see next..

This is my favorite podcast. I’m super ashamed to admit it, but I haven’t written a review for this podcast even though I’ve been listening since the beginning. I look forward your hot takes every week and am super excited to experience the final season of GOT with these guys! I came for the Game of Thrones and am so glad I stayed for the *whispers* off season tour. When I hear what you’ll be talking about next week, I immediately seek out that media so I can be part of the conversation. I love the podcast so much that I’m not only writing but joining the small council Patreon so I can be one of the cool kids. Joanna, please feel free to read this in a Minnesota accent. Uffda

Everything about this podcast is on point. I started listening to Da7e, Neil, and Joanna before Game of Thrones went on its year-long hiatus, but have come to realize that my favorite part of the podcast isn't the fun and ever-changing host introductions, thoughtfully selected musical intros/outros, intelligent pop culture commentary, entertaining and witty off-topic banter, or even the awareness/inclusiveness/empathy that permeates the hosts' sometimes aligned but oftentimes diverging points of view (please don't misinterpret this comment: each of these parts are amazing). My favorite part is the way that each host (in their own way) brings their full, vulnerable selves to each of these episodes, sharing their joys, sorrows, stresses. At the risk of sounding creepy, these are my favorite make-believe friends. I hope they become yours, too.Granville?

The guy I had a crush on in high school's middle name was Albert, but that didn't sound like Neil. Arnold sounds more Neil. *shrugs*I love this podcast, and will stick with Neil, Joanna, and Dave through the long winter and the sweet, sweet summer. Big fan of the OFF SEASON TOUR even if I haven't watched/read/played whatever it is they are talking about. Who cares? It's fun in my ears. Can't wait until this new season to hear the end. Also, WHY NO MAGICIANS EPISODE? I know Joanna's with me. Please?

Love Joanna and Dave, the Lennon and McCarthy of podcasting Every time they team-up I know it’ll be great. Individually their other shows are solid, with the best parts being Joanna and Dave, but together they are Magic. Neil is just fine. He got invited one week and refused to leave. He’s more of a Hype Man, Kevin Eubanks type, laughing at every morsel of a joke. Anyway, listen for Joanna and Dave, power thru the Yellow Submarine.

Everyone should listen to this! But only if you like funny people talking about stuff they like, or sometimes don’t like. I started listening during season 6ish of GoT, and stayed because the off season tour episodes are so good! They’ve turned me on to things I didn’t think I would like (The Expanse! Other stuff!), and I love that this pod doesn’t sound as scripted or rehearsed as others. Please don’t take offense to that, I truly do enjoy the off the cuff remarks! Storm chasing has become one of my favorite segments and I hope it continues through Season 8 of recaps and wild predictions about the plot. Just love everything you’re doing and thought it was time I told you! (I don’t know how my name will appear on this, if it’s based off of my email address? But you can just refer to me as Kel if you have to give a name, or if you even end up reading this on the pod!)

I've been listening to this lovely podcast for years now and am ashamed to say this is my first review. I am a huge fan of spoilers, to the point where I watched a portuguese cam of The Force Awakens the night before I was seeing it in theaters (no regrets even though I didn't understand a THING). Anywho, this podcast dives into all the great things happening in the media world, whether you just want a general overview, or those delightful spoilers. Even though Game of Thrones is heading into its last season, I know this podcast will continue to thrive. Thank you Joanna, for your awesome accents and sound effects, as well as in-depth analysis into all things great. Thank you Dave, for keeping them polygons on their toes, and giving us insight inside multiple SciFi and Fantasy universes. Thank you Neil, for your light heartedness and reminding us of all the friends we made along the way. Can't wait to see what awaits this podcast after The Long Night is over!

Best Pop Culture Podcast out there!!

The 3 hosts have the kind of chemistry that comes with years of cultivating a comfortable rapport - it feels like you're sitting in on great friends that take absolute delight in talking about/sharing what they love, which in this case is Game of Thrones, and pop culture in general. I came for the GRRM and stayed for everything else.Joanna Robinson has the most infectious, delightful laugh in all of podcast-dom, and it's a testament to their joint enterprise that in the event one of the hosts are absent, you still get a show giving it their full 100%. The one podcast I try never to miss - kudos to all, and keep up the amazing work! It means more than you'd realize... :-)

You want answers?! I want the spoilers!!

by ObiSean-kenobi on
Rating: ★★★★★

You can't handle the spoilers! Son, we live in a world that has podcasts, and those podcasts have to be hosted by people with opinions. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Patreon Subscriber? Joanna, Neil, and Da7e have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Sir Pounce and you curse the Kingsguard. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Sir Pounce's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And knowing about these spoilers, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives! You don't want the spoilers, because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want these hosts on this podcast. You need these hosts on this podcast. They use words like "pew", "pew", "CGI". These hosts use these words as the backbone of a life spent explaining something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a listener who rises and sleeps listening to the very speculation that Joanna, Neil, and Da7e provide, and then questions the manner in which they provide it! I would rather you just said "thank you", and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a mic, and start your own podcast. Either way, I don't give a d@mn what you think you are entitled to!

Finally writing a review for this podcast as I start season 2 of the Magicians (that’s to catch your attention, Joanna). Per Dave’s direction I’m giving it 5 stars and writing what I want - and it is all positive. I love the hosts insights during the GOT season. They alert me to things I totally missed and I get to act super knowledgeable around other friends who don’t listen to the pod. The off season tour is fantastic. I end up watching and reading things I wouldn’t otherwise. None of the hosts come across as pretentious (like they sometimes do in other pop culture podcasts) but they totally know what they are talking about. I listen to Joanna here and on Little Gold Men and I’ve learned that our tastes align. I was particularly delighted when she gave a shout out to the Enchanted Forest Chronicles in the dragons episode. Cut to me watching the Magicians, a show I never would have watched but for Joanna’s recommendation. It was a slow start, but man it starts to get good at the end of season 1. Thanks to the 3 hosts for the entertaining conversations that keep me company on my walks home from work.

After the unexpected, but endlessly delightful discovery that Neil not only is deeply familiar with Steel Magnolias, but can drop quotes in full Southern accent at the drop of the hat - I must now beg for something I did not know I needed until now: a Steel Magnolias episode or some episode that involves movies that require y’all to whip out your Southern accents throughout. Or even just an episode about movies you have deep affection/familiarity with because of your parents, as Neil mentioned his mom loves Steel Magnolias. Of course, since this is a review, five out of five stars for this podcast. Join its Patreon!

I started listening to this podcast in summer of 2016, after having been a fan of Joanna and Da7e's other podcast, The Thought Bubble. I don't watch Game of Thrones, but I enjoyed their takes on comics enough that I decided to give the Storm of Spoilers (Off Season Tour) a try. Two and a half years later, their podcast is one of my favorites and one of the few I will download and listen to as soon as I can. Listening to Da7e, Joanna, and Neil review things feels like sitting with good friends and getting their honest opinions on Films and TV over a beer. I appreciate that they don't always have the same opinions about things but are understanding as to the differing opinions.Last year, they set up a Patreon for the show, which I joined back in August. It is one of the best decisions I made last year. Not only do Patrons have the luxury of listening to bonus segments weekly and voting on things for the show (proving democracy is messy), but they get access to the Storm of Spoilers Slack. The Slack has been a great place for me this past year, and is full of amazing people that I'm so glad I've found. This is the best podcast with the best fanbase!Thank you Joanna (Clever Girl), Da7e (Praise the Tomato God), and Neil (I Have A Theory {It Could Be Bunnies})!!!A.J.K. on the Slack

During the season the charming hosts offer great insight into GoTs, and during the off-season they cover a fun assortment of other pop-culture topics. My only complaint is the “Don't Fall Down” campaign. I feel like I would have otherwise put these public tumbles out of my mind. Jackasses.

This podcast is such a delight! I first stumbled upon Joanna with Cast of Kings whilst in my search of companion podcasts for Game of Thrones. Being a book reader, I thirsted for other hot takes, and followed her to the tinfoil Citadel of Storm of Spoilers. Stuck around for every off season tour, which in the fandom and peak TV swell we are in, has been a guiding light! I’ve now watched The End of the F’ing World, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Roma, Black Mirror, and Wild Wild Country (among others) that I may not have found without their guidance. I rounded out my Joanna triple with Little Gold Men (shout out Vanity Fair and Oscars season), which is a must listen for anyone who follows awards season hype. I picked up my double with Da7e jumping onto Fighting in the War Room, which has some cross over in topics, but is another enjoyable listen!! And Neil, the shoutout on the basketball terminology for you!!! You guys are a joy & the camaraderie has me smiling in my car during my morning commute. I hope you guys keep it up past the last season of GoT! Ya’ll are he friends I’ve made along the way. #dontfalldown #getbackup

Like so many others, I originally came to this show to hear spoileriffic Game of Thrones discussions, but stayed for the insightful, delightful banter between our three charming hosts. While the GoT episodes have always been great, I could not have anticipated the enjoyment I would get from the *whispering* Off Season Tour. Every episode feels like a weekly get-together with a group of well-informed friends, just nerding out about subjects from all corners of pop culture. Speaking of hanging with friends, I have to give a special shout out to the Slack community that was started for Patreon supporters of the podcast. It has truly become one of the most wonderful places on the internet, populated by warm, welcoming folk offering everything from baking tips to emotional support. Also, there's an entire channel for pictures of pets. I mean, what more do you need? But seriously, thank you Neil, Da7e, and Joanna from the bottom of my heart for the endless hours of entertainment you've provided, and now for bringing all the amazing Slack-babies together. I LOVE this podcast. Episodes in your off season tour are one of the highlights of my week. But I also love your coverage of GoT as you make me feel sane. Speaking with friends who constantly insist that GoT’s quality only gets better and better as the seasons progress makes me feel madder than Aerys. I say things like “but plot logic, character motivations, Dorne, the frickin map!” And they just respond “but fire, ice, explosions, fire explosions, ice explosions”. Right. Anyway, you three are the GOAT and I can’t wait to hear your coverage of these last 6 GoT films. Let’s hope it doesn’t all go down in a giant green flame.

Hey! I’ve listened to the podcast for years now (maybe 2015?) but finally felt compelled to write a review after listening to the Glass episode. I reluctantly listened to it today (Saturday after it posted) because i was bored to tears and, wouldn’t you know it, enjoyed myself IMMENSELY. The only M Night Shyamalan movie I’ve ever seen was the Village (I was a very precocious child who loved stories about Puritans—felt completely betrayed by the twist in that one), so you can understand why i didn’t feel the need to listen to a podcast about Glass. You’d think after listening to Joanna, Da7e, and Neil for so long I’d have known better. This podcast is ALWAYS great—whether about GoT or something I know nothing about (various Tremors episodes included). Keep up the good work people and I’ll be listening to every episode! A great Game of Thrones podcast that has evolved into an excellent all-around pop culture bonanza. I've loved listening to Joanna, Dave, and Neil as they break down shows, movies and entire franchises while offering (often prescient) speculation about the future of various entertainment entities. They are always well informed, and their intelligent analysis is super thought provoking and helps check my fanboy instincts/reactions. I think more in-depth about the content and often appreciate it more having heard their critiques and praises. The cherry on top is the great rapport between the hosts. To quote other reviews, it's like having 3 friends in your head. This podcast has become a weekly ritual for me, so much so that when my girlfriend tragically slipped on a storm drain, after helping her up I nearly blurted out "but it's December you made it so far!". A Cross-Promotional Game of Da7es

by Penguin Tom on
Rating: ★★★★★

I've been inspired this week to finally leave reviews for my 2 favorite podcasts, both of which are produced by Dave Gonzales. Episodes of A Storm of Spoilers and Fighting in the War Room usually show up in my podcatcher on the same day every week. So I like to play a game trying to figure out which episode actually was recorded first, based on Da7e's references to the same material in both podcasts. This week, Da7e offered a plethora of "Into the Spiderverse" related CGI jargon in both episodes about digital puppets, comic book color bleeding, and animation styles (3D may be a step too far!). I didn't understand any of it, but this was far and away my favorite episode of A Game of Da7es. Five Stars. Now, Da7e can try to figure out which of these reviews I wrote first. P.S. Apologies to Joanna in advance, but it's my birthday. PEW PEW PEW! PEW PEW PEW!

Great Listen, Plus Neil is from Cleveland

This podcast has gotten stronger over the years, even as it deals less with its original source materials. I prefer the off-season stuff more than the Game of Thrones stuff at this point, and even listen when I don't know much or care much about the topics they've chosen.Special shout-out to the Holiday Episode this year, which was fun, plus Neil basically described my childhood in west Cleveland suburbs (midnight masses, driving around looking at holiday lights to get out the family gatherings, etc). I knew without a doubt what he was going to pick as his favorite holiday beverage - GLBC's Christmas Ale, which doesn't taste like a Christmas Tree as much as it tastes like EVERYTHING you love about the holidays in beer form. Christmas Ale is the one thing Clevelanders are proud of beyond all else (probably even more than Lebron), and Neil should have talked about its awesomeness for about 5 minutes longer than he did.Keep up the great work!

I’m long overdue in writing a review for this wonderful podcast and I can’t believe that Joanna’s hot fruit aversion is what finally forced it out of me. There have been many times listening to these three lovely hosts where I have felt “seen” or directly spoken to, yet NOTHING has topped this revelation (and Mike Schur too?! We’re in good company). Joanna, Dave, and Neil can always be counted on to provide thoughtful and entertaining discussion about all things Game of Thrones and, during the Off Season Tour, the wider world of pop culture. Each of the hosts brings their own unique perspective and personality to the podcast and their conversations are all the better for it. *Special note for Joanna (Dave and Neil you’re really great too!):You don’t need to read this out loud if it makes you uncomfortable, but I wanted to very sincerely thank you. Listening to your podcasts and reading your writing has helped me to understand the importance of being able to analyze and contextualize the stories I love. You taught me that acknowledging the flaws and problematic parts within a beloved story or world doesn’t need to ruin it, and is in fact a necessary part of experiencing pop culture. This skill has become invaluable to me (especially in a world where things like the Cursed Child exist) and has surely saved me from becoming an embittered and rage-filled internet commenter. So thank you, I’ll keep listening and learning.

By far my favorite pop culture podcast. The hosts Joanna, Neil and Dave bring such varied and insightful views that always enhance my appreciation for whatever topic they are discussing.Joanna is a 'National Treasure' and Nicolas Cage might as well cast her as the subject of the long anticipated third installment of that movie. Dave, you are a delight, I love your nerdy fascinations and tangents that will never win you a Great Debate popular vote poll but will always win my heart and Neil, I love your outsider/every-man perspective which always makes the discussions more grounded: you both can also be in the upcoming Blockbuster hit as well.If the weight of this, my first ever commented review of my 30 year life, brings anything, I hope it is a future episode from this podcast about the amazing SyFy show "The Magicians". This show just seems to get stronger every season and deserves a wider audience of supporters to keep it going. Also, I want to use this newfound soap box to say to everyone please watch "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency". This is definitely one of the weirdest and quirkiest shows I have ever seen, the second season revolves around a gay prince escaping his fantasy realm to seek the help of the titular detective to save him from an evil wizard, this show desperately needs viewers to rally behind it to get picked up for another season like NOW.*** Big shout out to my beautiful boyfriend Felipe for recommending this podcast to me: I am very excited to spend another year getting to know what other great podcasts you've been hiding from me... And you know, more about your life and who you are and stuff. Thanks for everything and keep up the good workGertPS my absolute favorite thing every week is hearing Joanna do the "pew pew" noise when Dave or Neil start the Storm Chasing segment. It makes me laugh every single time.

Probably the best podcast I’ve listened to

I’ve been listening to this podcast for the past 6 months or so starting from the beginning of the off season tour and I might even start watching GOT once I catch up on the podcast. I consider myself a big fan of all things pop culture, but these hosts have covered so much pop culture that I’ve never even heard of which has really surprised me. I love all of the episodes even if the topic doesn’t seem like it will interest me and each of the host is great. I’m not sure if I’ll ever catch up, but I’m finally in the 2018 episodes so here’s hoping!
