“I was just pretending to be an Emcee like all the dudes before me. It wasn't for showbiz...When I started writing rhymes and messing with my brother's turntables, it was like me playing with my G.I. Joe or pretending I'm batman or playing with my army men...It was all make believe.” D.M.C. tells Tim on The Library during their interview about his purpose for writing prior to his life being saved after hearing Sarah McLachlan's “Angel.” (Hear how McLachlan's “Angel” literally saved D.M.C.'s life as told on The Moth here - themoth.org/posts/stories/angel).

D.M.C. continues, “After that Sarah McLachlan meeting, it pushed my responsibility, it made it worse for me because now I carry a heavier load....It made my representation of Hip Hop more responsible. Because now I have a tool, a superpower and a gift that I must use at this point in my life.”

Entire interview with Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels on The Library will be up soon
