143: Netflix Culture Code: Giving Employees Context In Their Role

Netflix’s culture code can be summarized by this quote: "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the people to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea." ‐Antoine De Saint‐Exupery We were so inspired by their culture deck that we’re dedicating a podcast series to it!  The first value from Netflix’s culture code to unpack is “Context, Not Control.” The best managers figure out how to get great outcomes by setting the appropriate context rather than by trying to control their people. Here’s your challenge for the week as a manager: When one of your talented people does something dumb, don’t blame them. Instead, ask yourself what context you failed to set.
