As children, we are often comforted when we are afraid of the dark. We have night lights, to distract us from our fears. When we hear sounds at night, they often sound louder, shadows look like monsters coming to get us, and every potentially scary experience we have ever had comes to mind and our bodies remember the previous terror, as though what happened then is happening now. If we get stuck in the dark, though it is scary, it is familiar, we know how to navigate. To actually, walk through the dark and turn on the light, is not as familiar. The consequences of not doing the unfamiliar are; staying in the dark, seeing that the “monsters” in your closet, are your clothes, believing and living a lie, that darkness whispers.
